Provision for a new Primary School
Mac Mic takes pride in being a trusted name for landowners, built on a track record of doing things the right way. That trust was vital in one of the most significant residential developments in Edinburgh in decades.
A landowner’s belief in Mac Mic unlocked 90 acres of Green Belt land, paving the way for nearly 1,000 new homes, the largest Green Belt release for residential development in Edinburgh in almost 40 years.
The project began in 2007, when we were invited to tender at auction for South Gilmerton Farm. Selected to enter an option agreement, we aimed to promote the site through the planning system. The 2008 financial crisis threatened the deal, but the landowner’s faith allowed the agreement to proceed without upfront payment, keeping our strategy on track.
The option agreement was signed in 2009, and a planning application submitted in 2014. After initial opposition from the Planning Authority, we successfully appealed to the Scottish Government, which granted permission in 2016, including a commitment to provide land and financial support for a new primary school.
We consulted with the local MP, MSP, and community councils, and staged public exhibitions to ensure local residents could understand and influence the proposals.
Phase 1: 200 homes sold off-market to Miller Homes in 2018.
Two further portions: sold in 2019.
Final phase: in progress with Taylor Wimpey, creating an additional 100 homes
